Description
A two-sided advertising trade card. On the front, a family of foxes in their finery: one in a red cape dances a pup into the air while another, in a yellow turban, sits on a rug with the little ones. Below them stands the stove itself, the Grand Duke, all nickel trim and cast-iron scrollwork, captioned “Grand Duke” and “J. S. & M. Peckham, Utica, N.Y.” The printer’s line reads “Stecher Lith. Co. Roch. N.Y.”
The back is the sales pitch: “Grand Duke First-Class Wood Cooking Stove, New Style,” with nickel panels, knobs and handles, a mica front door, a patent automatic oven shelf, two sizes (Nos. 8 and 9, with or without reservoir), and instructions for baking and heating water. It names J. S. & M. Peckham of Utica (established 1827) and W. H. Peckham of Minneapolis (established 1886). Old tape remnants sit at the top corners, partly covering the end of “Stove” on the back, which is foxed and stained, with a dealer’s pencil notes at lower right. Built to heat a kitchen, which is more than can be said for most galleys.
