From the Captain's Log

This piece was painted by Charlie Burns, a local artist who's got a knack for the abstract. It's an acrylic painting, and it's a bit bigger than it looks, measuring in at 36 by 48 inches. Charlie's work is always something to behold, and this one is no exception.

I picked it up a while back because I was drawn to the bold colors and the way the forms seem to float on that teal background. Honestly, I'm only selling it because I'm out of wall space. It's been a great conversation starter, though, and folks often ask about those two discs like they're characters in a story.

Name the most you'd pay. We bid for you, just enough to stay in front, like eBay. Nobody sees your max, not even Captain Nemo.

How the bidding works (the short version of the Articles)
  • The first bid starts a 7-day clock. When it hits zero, the top bidder wins.
  • Enter your max. The price only climbs as far as needed to keep you in front, so you may win for less.
  • Each bid has to beat the price by a small step. Ties go to whoever bid first.
  • Some pieces carry a reserve, a minimum price kept secret. If bidding ends below it, the piece doesn't sell. The box tells you if it's met.
  • A bid in the last 5 minutes resets the clock to 5 minutes. No sniping.
  • Win, and we email a pay link. You have 3 days to pay. Pickup is at the South Loop dock.
  • A bid is a promise to buy. Please bid only if you mean it.

Description

This abstract acrylic painting by Charlie Burns measures 36 x 48 inches. It features two round forms, one orange and one violet, strung on a diagonal ribbon across a weathered teal ground. Small boxy shapes line the margins, reminiscent of a crew mustering on deck. The paint is thick and scraped, giving a textured, tactile quality.

The piece is set in a deeply carved gilt frame, heavy as a ship’s bell. The bold colors and dynamic composition invite the viewer to ponder the relationship between the two discs, like Ishmael and Queequeg, roped together and sailing the seas.
